The Emotion lever.
Emotion is the lever a message pulls when it moves the body before the mind. It reaches for fear, hope, outrage, or longing so you feel the conclusion before you reason it.
A message built on Emotion installs a feeling and lets the feeling do the arguing. Fear narrows you, outrage bonds you against a target, hope opens your wallet, longing keeps you scrolling. None of this is illegitimate, feeling is how humans decide. It becomes manipulation when the feeling is manufactured to bypass the part of you that would have asked a question.
The gift
Emotion is what makes anything matter. A message with no feeling changes nothing, and the most important truths are felt before they are proven.
The cost
A manufactured feeling is a backdoor. Outrage and fear in particular shut down the slow thinking that would have caught the trick.
How to read for it
Name the feeling the message installed, then ask what it wants you to do while you feel it. The action is usually the point and the feeling is the vehicle.
