The Authority lever.
Authority is the lever a message pulls when it borrows weight. It signals rank, expertise, or belonging-to-the-room so you defer before you evaluate.
A message built on Authority spends credibility it wants you to assume rather than verify. The credential, the logo, the calm certainty, the name-drop. Authority is efficient, because checking everything yourself is exhausting and deference is usually the smart shortcut. It is dangerous for the same reason. The shortcut is invisible until someone abuses it.
The gift
Real Authority saves you time. Earned expertise is worth deferring to, and trust is what lets a society function.
The cost
Borrowed Authority is theater. The most manipulated you will ever be is the moment you stop evaluating because someone sounded sure.
How to read for it
Separate the claim from the costume. Ask what is actually being asserted, and whether it would hold if a stranger with no title said it.
