Can I transfer ChatGPT memory to another AI?
No. ChatGPT's memory lives inside OpenAI's account and does not export to Claude, Gemini, or anything else. What can move instead is a record you keep yourself, outside any single platform, that you paste into whichever assistant you're using that day.
Why memory doesn't travel between assistants
Memory, in ChatGPT, Claude, or any other assistant, is a feature of that specific product. It is stored on that company's servers, tied to that account, and built to make that one app better at remembering you. There is no shared standard between OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google for what "memory" even means internally, so there is nothing for one company's export to plug into another company's import, even where an export option exists at all.
ChatGPT does have a data export. What it produces is an archive built for your own records, a raw dump of chats and account data, not a structured memory file another AI is built to read and understand. Opening it in Claude does nothing, because Claude was never built to make sense of it.
What actually happens when you use more than one AI
Each assistant starts cold. If you have been building context inside ChatGPT for months and open Claude for the first time, Claude knows none of it. You retype the parts that matter, again, in your own words, every time you cross that line. That retyping is the real cost, and it is the same cost you pay switching jobs, switching therapists, or switching coaches: the new party starts at zero regardless of how much history exists somewhere else.
What is actually portable
A record kept outside any single AI's memory feature does not have this problem, because it was never built to live inside one company's product. It is plain text, or a structured file, that you own and control, that you update over time, and that works with any assistant simply because it is something you paste in rather than something the platform generated and locked to itself.
Platform memory
Stored by the app, tied to that account, invisible and unusable outside it. Not designed to leave.
A record you own
Plain text, dated, yours to keep and hand to any assistant. Designed to leave, because it never lived inside one to begin with.
This is the idea behind LUX: a continuity file you build over time, that stays yours, and that you can hand to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or anything else that reads text. It does not replace the app-level memory those tools already have. It gives you the one piece that memory never was: something that goes with you when you leave.
Common questions
Can I export my ChatGPT memory?
Does memory transfer if I switch to a paid ChatGPT plan?
Is there any AI memory that is actually portable?
LUX builds that record with you: six open questions, about eight minutes, one word and a card dated the day you start. From there it grows with use and compresses into a file you can hand to any AI. Free to create, no card.
