Why do I act like a different person around different people?

With your boss you are measured. With old friends you are loud. With your family you are seventeen again. None of them feel fake, and none of them feel like the whole story.

Start with the reassuring part: everyone does this. Psychologists call it code-switching or self-presentation, and it is a skill, not a defect. You emphasize different parts of yourself depending on who is in the room, the same way you dress differently for a wedding and a hike. A person who behaved identically in every context would not be more honest. They would be less socially fluent.

The question stops being harmless at a specific point: when you can no longer find the constant underneath the versions. When you finish a day of switching and cannot say which one was you. When being alone feels like static because there is no audience to tell you who to be. That is not code-switching anymore. That is a self that has become entirely performance.

Why the versions exist

Each version of you was built for a reason, usually early and usually sensibly. The quiet, agreeable one kept the peace in a loud house. The funny one earned a place in the room. The competent one was the only one who got taken seriously. You did not choose these on purpose. You kept what worked, context by context, until the switching became automatic.

The versions are not lies. They are all made of you. The trouble is that a strategy you built at nine is still running at twenty-nine, firing off the old context cues, whether or not it still serves you. You walk into your parents' kitchen and the seventeen-year-old takes the wheel before you have taken your coat off.

When it starts to cost you

The versions are all real. The question is whether anyone, including you, has met what they are versions of.

The fix is not to flatten yourself into one personality for every room. It is to get a clear line of sight on the thing the versions have in common. Try these, in writing:
