The half-truth.
The half-truth is the story you tell yourself that is almost true, the convenient version a reading names so you can stop hiding inside it.
The most durable self-deceptions are not lies, they are half-truths. The story that is accurate enough to defend and incomplete enough to hide in. I am just busy. I am fine on my own. I do not need much. A reading finds the specific half-truth you are living inside and says the other half out loud, which is usually the half you already knew.
Why it matters
It matters because a half-truth cannot be argued away, only seen. Once it is named precisely, it stops working, and that is the moment something can actually change.
What it is not
It is not a judgment or a gotcha. The half-truth is named with care, because it was protecting something, and the point is to see it, not to be ashamed of it.
