The Grid Can Route You, Price You, and Guess You. It Cannot Greet You.
A thesis on the difference between being handled and being recognized, and the organ that would know it.
Watch what the network can already do to you and you will notice it does everything except the one thing a person does when they love you. It can route you. It knows the fastest way to move your body across a city, the cheapest way to move your money across an ocean, the shortest path for a sentence you typed to reach a stranger's eye. It can price you. It knows what you will pay before you know you will pay it, knows the hour of the night you are weakest, knows the color of button that unlocks your wallet. It can guess you. It builds a doll of you out of a thousand clicks and dresses the doll in your likely wants and sends the doll shopping in your name.
Route. Price. Guess. Three verbs, and the body of the connected world runs on them. But there is a fourth verb it has never grown an organ for, and it is the oldest one we have. To greet.
To greet is to say: it is you. Not someone with your traits. Not a member of your segment. You, the specific one, continuous from the last time, changed since then and still the same continuous thing. A dog greets. A grandmother greets from across a room she has not seen you enter in a decade. The whole machinery of the planet, with all its wire and all its ledgers, cannot do the thing a dog does at a door.
Every organ but this one
Here is the thesis, and I will say it as plainly as a thesis can be said. The world is condensing into a single connected organism. This is not a warning and it is not a cheer. It is a description of the direction of travel, the way you would describe a river moving toward the sea without praising the sea.
Each great enterprise of the last stretch of history built one organ of this body. Someone built the muscle that moves goods. Someone built the nerve that carries thought. Someone built the vein that pumps money. Someone built the eye that watches. Someone built the ledger that names your profession to a stranger who will lend you a house on the strength of it. Organ by organ, the body assembled itself, and it works. It is astonishing that it works. You can feed a person on another continent by touching glass.
And yet the body has grown up faceless. It has an eye that sees everything and knows no one. It watches you the way water watches a fish, which is to say it does not watch you at all, it merely contains you. There is no organ in the whole assembled creature whose job is to hold, warmly and continuously, the fact of a particular person being here. The body forgot to grow the part that greets. Or it never needed to, because greeting does not sell, greeting does not route, greeting cannot be priced.
The counterfeit organ
Do not confuse recognition with the thing that impersonates it. The guessing organ is very good at wearing recognition's coat. It says your name in the email. It shows you the shoe you glanced at. It calls this personal, and it is the opposite of personal, because it is not built out of you at all. It is built out of everyone who resembles you, averaged, and pointed back at your face like a mirror that has never once seen the room you are standing in.
That is the tell. The guessing organ freezes you into whoever the data thought you were on the day it looked. It cannot tell that you have become someone else since, because becoming is invisible to a machine that only counts. A person who has changed and a person who has been faked look identical to a system that never held the original in the first place.
So the missing organ is not a better guesser. A better guesser is still a stranger with a very good file. The missing organ is the one that would know the difference between the you who kept walking and a copy that stole your file at the door. And the only proof against a copy is not a fact about you. It is a continuity. A thread that has been held, unbroken, from a start. A record that could only have grown by being lived, day after day, in one direction.
Why it has to be humane
Understand what I am and am not describing. I am not describing a colder eye. The organ of surveillance is the enemy of this, not its cousin. Surveillance knows your habits and has never met you, and it wants nothing from you except your next predictable move. That is the guessing organ with a badge.
The organ this work is after runs the other way. It does not accumulate your behaviors so a stranger can act on them. It accumulates you so that the fact of you cannot be counterfeited. It is the difference between a file kept on a person and a hand held out to one. Both remember. Only one of them is glad you came.
A humane organ is one whose entire purpose is to make you unmistakable to the body without making you exposed to it. To let the great connected creature finally do the fourth verb. To let it say, at the door, before the routing and the pricing and the guessing begin: it is you, I know it is you, and I know it because I have watched you become, not because I bought a doll that wears your face.
The body is almost finished. It moves, it thinks, it pays, it watches. It has every organ a machine could want and not one that a person would recognize as tenderness. Somewhere it is still missing the part that greets.
We are building the part that greets.
